Garage Door Repair Cost Guide (2026): What Repairs Really Cost in NY, NJ & CT
Updated 2026 garage door repair costs for the NY tri-state: springs, openers, cables, tracks, panels, and emergency calls — with the factors that move the price.
Updated August 2026. This guide uses the same price ranges we publish on our garage door repair page — parts, labor, and tax included — so the numbers here are what you'd actually see on an invoice, not a national average that doesn't apply to Queens, Long Island, or Bergen County.
The short version
- Basic repairs (cables, rollers, track alignment, sensors): $150–$450
- Spring replacement (torsion or extension, replaced in pairs): $200–$550
- Opener repair (boards, gears, travel limits, remotes) to replacement: $150–$500
- New door installation: quoted per door — size, insulation, and style set the price; see our installation page for current published ranges
Most single-visit repairs in the tri-state land between $150 and $550. If someone quotes you far below that, ask what's not included. If someone quotes far above it, get a second opinion before you sign.
Spring replacement: $200–$550
Springs are the most common repair we do and the one people most often overpay for. A torsion spring (the coil mounted above the door) is rated in cycles — one open-and-close is one cycle — and a standard 10,000-cycle spring on a door used four times a day lasts roughly seven years. When one breaks, you hear a bang and the door suddenly weighs 200 pounds or more.
What moves the price inside the range: a single door with one spring sits at the bottom; a double door with two springs sits higher; and upgrading to high-cycle springs (25,000+ cycles) adds to the part cost but roughly doubles the time before you pay for this again. We replace springs in pairs, because when one has reached end of life the other is right behind it, and a second visit costs more than a second spring.

Opener repair or replacement: $150–$500
Openers fail in layers. Cheap fixes — a misaligned photo-eye, a worn wall button, a dead remote, travel limits drifting — are at the low end. A failed logic board, stripped drive gear, or burnt-out motor on an older unit pushes you toward the top of the range, and at that point a new opener often makes more sense than repairing a 15-year-old one with no safety-reversal upgrade.
A new belt-drive or Wi-Fi opener installed generally lands at the upper end of this range. If you're deciding, our post on repairing vs. replacing a garage door opener walks through the math.
Cables, rollers, and track: $150–$450
A snapped or frayed cable usually presents as a door hanging crooked or jammed on one side. Cables are replaced in pairs and the door is rebalanced, which is where most of the labor goes. Worn rollers make a door loud and shaky; a full set of nylon rollers quiets it down and is one of the better-value repairs on a door you plan to keep. Track work ranges from a simple realignment to replacing a bent section after a vehicle strike.

Panel and section damage
Panel pricing depends on whether the manufacturer still makes a matching section. If they do, a single replacement panel is a mid-range repair. If the door is discontinued, you're choosing between a mismatched panel and a new door — and on an older door, the new door usually wins. We'll tell you which situation you're in before quoting.
What an emergency call costs
After-hours, weekend, and holiday appointments can carry a higher rate than a scheduled daytime appointment. The repair itself is priced the same; the difference is the appointment. The quote you get is the total price, inclusive of fees and tax, before any work starts — and if the problem can safely wait until morning and save you money, we'll say so. See our emergency repair page for what counts as an emergency.
What moves the price up or down
- Door size and weight. Double doors and heavy wood or insulated doors need bigger springs and more labor.
- Parts quality. High-cycle springs and nylon rollers cost more up front and last years longer.
- Age of the door. Old doors often reveal a second problem when the first is fixed — a bearing, a cable — and we'd rather quote the whole picture than surprise you.
- Access. A packed garage, a low-headroom track, or a door behind a locked gate adds time.
- Timing. After-hours emergency appointments can cost more than a scheduled visit.
How to not overpay
Three habits protect you. First, ask for the total price before work starts — parts, labor, tax, and any service fee — and get it in writing on the invoice. Second, be suspicious of a very low "service call" price paired with a vague repair estimate; the number that matters is the one you pay at the end. Third, if you've been told you need a full replacement for a door that still moves, get a second opinion. We offer a free second-opinion review for exactly this.
Repair or replace?
A useful rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of a new door, and the door is over 15 years old, replacing usually wins — you get a warranty, modern safety hardware, and insulation. If the door is under 10 years old and the problem is a single part, repair it. Our guide on signs you need a new garage door goes deeper.
