Garage Door Opener Not Working After a Power Outage? Try This First

Power came back but your garage door opener won't respond? Here's the real reset sequence to try before assuming the opener is broken — in the order that actually works.

The power flickers back on, half the house resets itself, and then you hit the garage door button and... nothing. No light, no motor hum, no movement. Before you assume the opener died, know that most post-outage opener problems aren't the opener at all — they're a disconnected carriage, a tripped breaker, or a safety sensor that got bumped out of alignment while the door was being worked by hand in the dark. Here's the actual troubleshooting order, the one a technician runs through on a service call, before anyone reaches for a wrench.

First, confirm the opener is actually getting power

This sounds obvious, but it's the single most common callback after an outage. Garage door openers are almost always plugged into a GFCI outlet, and GFCI outlets trip easily — a power surge when the grid comes back online is exactly the kind of event that trips one. Look at the outlet the opener is plugged into (usually mounted near the motor unit on the ceiling) for a small reset button, and press it.

If the outlet checks out, go to the breaker panel. A whole-house outage followed by the power snapping back on is a classic trigger for a tripped breaker, especially on an older panel. Flip the breaker fully off, then back on — don't just nudge it. If the opener's status light comes on once power is confirmed, you're already halfway to done.

Second, check whether the door was disconnected from the opener

If anyone opened the garage door by hand during the outage, there's a good chance they pulled the red emergency release cord to do it. That cord disconnects the door from the opener's trolley so it can move freely — which is exactly what you want during an outage, and exactly why the opener does nothing afterward. It's not broken; it's just not connected to the door anymore.

Look at the trolley (the piece that rides along the rail above the door) and see if it's sitting away from where the arm connects to the door. To reconnect, most systems just need the trolley pulled back until it clicks into the carriage, or the release handle pulled toward the door and the opener run through one cycle to re-engage. If you're not sure, don't force anything — a cross-connected system can bind, and that's worth a quick call instead of guesswork.

Third, look at the safety sensor lights

Every opener installed in the last few decades has a legally required safety sensor pair, mounted a few inches off the floor on each side of the door track, that has to see each other in a straight line for the opener to close the door. A power surge, or someone bumping a sensor while moving things around during the outage, is enough to knock one out of alignment.

Check both sensors: one is usually solid, the other blinking or dark means misalignment or an obstruction. Wipe both lenses clean, make sure nothing (a stored bin, a broom, a shadow from something new in the garage) sits in the beam, and gently adjust the crooked one until the light goes solid on both sides. This is one of the few opener issues that's genuinely safe to check yourself, since you're just looking, not touching anything under tension.

Fourth, if the opener runs the motor but the door won't move right, don't force it

Sometimes the opener wakes back up and the motor clearly runs, but the door reverses immediately, stops partway, or strains and won't lift. That's a different problem than a power issue — it usually means the travel limits or force settings got scrambled, which can happen when an opener loses power mid-cycle and doesn't save its last known position correctly.

This is the point to stop pressing the button repeatedly. Repeated attempts against a door that's genuinely stuck (frozen seal, an obstruction, a spring or cable that let go during the outage — coincidence, but it happens) is how a simple reset turns into a burned-out motor or a stripped gear. If the door doesn't move cleanly after the first troubleshooting pass, that's a sign something mechanical needs a look, not another button press.

When it really is the opener's electronics

Power outages are hard on anything with a circuit board, and garage door openers are no exception. A surge when the grid comes back online can damage the logic board or the capacitor that powers the motor, especially on units that have been in service for many years. If you've confirmed power at the outlet, reconnected the trolley, and checked the sensors — and the opener still shows no light and no response at all — that points to internal electronics rather than anything you can troubleshoot from the garage floor.

At that point, a technician can test the board and capacitor directly and tell you honestly whether it's a repair or whether the unit is old enough that replacement makes more sense.
